ELBOW.
« — . (from otje owa cobbespoitdekt ) September 5. A pound is about to be erected on this township — which is badly required, as there are large mobs of horses running in this neighborhood known to beloug to persons residing at lavercargill, Winton, and Queenstown. The place is a favorite one for vagrant cattle, which are a pest to squatters, farmers, and others. The Old Wakatipu Deep Sinking Company have abandoned their workings at present, owing to the large quantity of water which has to be contended with at this time of the year, all the creeks being overflown just now. A rush has set in to this field, and the men are said to be doing remarkably well. " John" is not particular whether h© mines on Crown Lauds or purchased property. Joseph Rogers, Esq ,of Atbol, bought twenty acres of land some years ago, which has proved to be auriferous, of which " John" has taken possession, and when civilly told to leave, answers coolly by saying " No savee." The Nokomai Flat &old Mining Company have at last made a start. The sinking of the shaft has been let to A. M' Arthur, at 25s per foot until water is struck, which is supposed will be at 10 or 15 feet deep. The cutting of the water race (34 chains long) is let to Messrs Paddon, Bradmore, and Saher, at £280. The claims on Paddy's Alley are said to be paying handsomely, and miners on the Nokomai are doing well.
