RIVERTON.

(fboit our own correspondent.) Our town is once more enlivened by the arrival of " our old friend," as the " Paxton" is very properly called here. It certainly ia a cheering sight to 3ee even her lying at the wharf. We are in great hopes that the squabble which has now for some time past been going on with regard to our ferry, will shortly be settled amicably. I observe that a notice is now posted on the Ferry House, to the effect that all persona plying on the ferry, without having applied for a license from the Corporation, will be dealt with according to tke law. This I consider only just. There are at present two men plying tbe ferry ; there is certainly a good living to be made out of it for one, but it can't well Bupport two, and, unlike any other trade or business, competition will not be the means of doing any good, but on the contrary is the cause of constant petty law cases, involving no few individuals in perpetual hot water. It is certainly high time this question waß settled, and we hope soon to see " the right man in the right place," minus opposition. A staff of surveyors arrived here yesterday, putting up at the Commercial, en route for Orepuki, where they go to survey the long-talked of tramway, which if made will certainly be a great boon to Kiverton and the district in general. May all due credit be given to the originators and promoters of the scheme. August 27, 1872.
