% Wellington, August 22. At three o'clock > this morning, a fire broke out on board the barque City of Newcastle. The fire got a good hold, but was extinguished.- Two: kerosene tins were found with- holes punched in them as if with a sheath knife. Traces of oil were found from the galley to the forecastle. John Ramie, a seaman, has been arrested. John Gfu'ilford 1 ; a fireman, fell down the hatchway, broke his' back, and is since dead, ... ..,- John Bainie, the seaman, has been brought up and remanded. Mr Arnot, late proprietor of the Wairarapa Mercury, died suddenly. It is supposed he had committed suicide. He had been charged with- the embezzle-, ment of money collected -by him as secretary of an Agricultural Society. He leaves a wife but no family.
