THE FREESTONE AT SEAWARD DOWNS.

Sib, — A few notes of my journey to Mataura to inspect the deposit of building stoae at Seaward Downs may interest soneof your readers. _ I am not surprised that the business of the town is dull at this particular season of tbe year, for the roads are in such a bad state that it is impossible for the farmer to come to town with anything like a load of produce. I refer to the East Road in particular, it being very much cut up with the 1 heavy loaded waggons from the Meat Preserving Works, to a complete puddle ankle- deep. A traveller is therefore compelled to leave the road, and take to the tussack, to get along. I see that there are two men and a dray at work, putting rubble stone in the wheel-tracks. The railway'is needed very much, it is plain to be seen. I see on the west side of the Mataura there is excellent freestone and sandstone for building purposes. The distance from Invercargill will be about 25 miles by the present road, and about 6 miles from' the surveyed line of railway. This stone ought to supersede brick in Invercargill when the railway is finished. The bricks hitherto made bere do not stand the action of the atmosphere, but the stone will, besides looking much better, and costing httle, if anything, more.— I am, 4c, T. J. Thompson. *
