The Victorian Government have promised that Ballarat shall have a loan of £170,000 to complete the Gong Gong water scheme. It is said that owing to the recent rise in the price of iron this sum will be insufficient, and that £200,000 will be required to carry out the scheme in its entirety. A recent visitor to Lyttelton says that that township seems now to consist principally of galvanised iron. There are now 271 mites of railway open for traffic in Victoria. Their total cost of construction has been £9,000,000. j
