THE LIVINGST ONE EXPEDITION.

Sib, —l notice in the Newa issue of August 7fch some remarks upon " The Livingstone search expeditions fitted out by the English nation regardless of expense," "at the expense of the British taxpayer." May I ask you whether the English nation has sent out any expedition in search of the Doctor ? I am aware of private efforts and of those of different societies or associations, but I have been under the impression until now that the English Q-overnment refused to aid in the search. The reference to a " search expedition" "at the expense of the British taxpayer," appears to point to some special knowledge within the writer's keeping, of which the colonial taxpayer, albeit a part of the English nation, has not yet been made aware. —l am, &c, ENQtriKEB. [The " Livingstone search expeditions, fitted out regardless of expense," "at the expense of the British tax-payer," owe their existence solely to the fertile imagination of the Southland News, like the late lamented " Lord Tichborne." Accuracy as to facts is however of quite secondary importance with some " smart" newspaper critics. The editor of the News was probably not aware that the English Govornm ent not long ago declined to sanction the very expenditure he charges them with having iooliahly incurred. Ed. ti. T.]
