"Wellington, August 2nd. In the House last night the Tramways Bill was further considered in Committee. The Public Health Bill passed through CommitteeMr Macandrew introduces to-day a Northern Ofcago District Public Works Loan Bill. Mr Eeynolds moved for au enquiry into the working of the immigration scheme in the Province of Otago. Mr Reader Wood, of Auckland, has given notice that he will move, "That this House regrets that the Government has not given effect to the resolution passed last session aa to holding the present session in Dunedin. Australian telegrams state that Capt. Logan, fof the Hero, will probably be heavily fined for concealing the existence of small-pox aboard his vessel. A competent actuary employed by the Government to value the claims which have accrued under the Civil Service Act reports the amount of the claims to be £285,000. The report was prepared under the repeal of the Civil Service Pensions Act. In the Upper House to-day, the Government, in reply to the Hon. Mr Sewell, said that no communication had been received from the Postmaster-General of Great Britain on the subject of estabL iishing a mail service between the colo-
nies of Victoria and New Zealand, and Great Britain, via San Francisco. ,< r . A motion by the Hon. Mr Reynolds will move, as an amend- ..„., ment, " Provided that, with the view of rendering Provincial legislation more efficient, the present Provinces be abolished, and two new Provinces constituted, one consisting of the Provinces in the North Island, and the other of the Provinces in the Middle Island. Further, that the Government introduce a bill giving effect to these resolutions during the present session."
