The following intelligence was brought by the s.s. Rangitoto, which arrived at Hokitika on the 26th ult. : — Melbotjenk, July 20th. The Treasurer made his financial statement on the night of the 16th. He stated that the revenue for the year ended June 30th, amounted to £3,727,150 — an income which had never before been realised in the Colony. The returns showed an increase of £183,400 on the estimate of his predecessor. The Customs revenue showed a lalling-off from I the estimate of £33,500. The estimated income for the present year he set down at £3.61 1,920, and the estimated expenditure at £3,705,938, leaving £5217 to be ! carried to next year's account. At an ' early period a proposal would be subI mitted to raise a loan of £1,000,000 for j reproductive works. [ The Assembly agreed by a large majority to adopt the sft. 3in. gauge for the railway extensions. A petition has been presented to the Assembly, praying for the imposition of a tax on imported stock. All the small-pox patients are progressing towards complete convalescence, and no fresh cases are reported. The extraordinary Equity case of Graham v. Graham is still being heard. The Foot-and- Mouth Disease Commission recommend that all healthy cattle imported into the Colony be quarantined for six months, and that all unhealthy cattle be destroyed. The issue of coin from the Mint has reached 95,000 sovereigns. The Albion Woollen Factory at Geelong has received orders for tweeds from Poole and other London firms. The Public "Works Department invites samples of stone for building the new Government House. The imports to Victoria from New Zealand during the year ended on the 31st March, 1872, amounted to £1,532,270, and the exports to New Zealand from Victoria during the same period, to £851,819. Mrs Miniver Davis, for attempting to poison her. husband at Brighton, has been sentenced to death. Sydney. In the case of Sutclifre, who died on board the Hero, from small-pox, the disease is pronounced to have been of the most virulent type. The Health "Officer reports that no further cases of small-pox have occurred on board the Hero. 2icwt. of specimens from Krohman's claim, Tambaroora, assayed 8320z5. of standard gold. The Governor had a narrow escape from injury through the horses in his carriage bolting. A man named Canfrey has died in hospital from the effects of being garrotted. A notice of motion has been given in the Anglican Synod that the use of the new Leetionary is illegal, and ought to be discontinued until] the Synodical sanction is obtained. The steamer Saxonia, laden with coal for Sydney, sank at Newcastle. The Newcastle colliers have refused the offer of the companies to give them an advance in wages of 6d per ton, and a strike is imminent. The Commercial Bank has declared a dividend and bonus equal to 17 per cent. The dividend of the City Bank is 6 per cent. Adelaide. Owing to the illness of a coal-trimmer on board the steamer Eangatira, from Sydney, the passengers were not allowed to land, but were taken, with the cargo, to King George's Sound. Ajnew Vaccinaion Bill has been introduced and passed through all its stages. Il renders vaccination compulsory, under a penalty of £2. Mr Knuckey, who has returned to Tennant's Creek from Daly "Waters, reports that the submarine cable is still unworkable. It is supposed that the congratulatory and other messages were taken on to Java by the steamer Investigator. Lady Daly, widow of the late Governor, has died, aged 71. The report; of the Meat Preserving Co. shows that the assets exceed the liabilities by £16,000. A further message from Mr Todd says ] that he hopes that communication with Java by the telegraph cable may be reestablished next week. The Kadina and Wallarroo railway shows a profit of nearly £9000 for the half-year. Hobaet Towy. At one of the most influential meetings ever held in Tasmania, resolutions condemnatory of the Government policy were carried. A case of horrible cruelty to a child has been heard at the criminal sessions. The child's mistress, one Rebecca Hay ton, was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment. BEIBBANE. Mr Lilley has resigned the leadership of the Opposition, as all that it required has been achieved.
