Auckland, August 1. At a full meeting of the agents of the Life Assurance Companies to-day, the new Act was condemned as an attempt to coerce business to the Government office, and as an unwarrantable interference with charters granted by the Imperial Government. The Suez mail arrived in Melbourne at noon on the 26th. A steamer was to leave for New Zealand on the 27th. Australian telegrams of the 26fch report flour in Melbourne at £15 ; maize, 3s Id ; sugars easier. It is stated that Governor Sir George F. Bowen will probably succeed Viscount Canterbury as Governor of Victoria in about two months. Adelaide telegrams report wheat at 5s 7d. Wellington, August 1. Mr Brogden has offered to form a company in London to construct railways on the following conditions :— Two continuous main lines to be constructed, one in the North Island leading from Wellington via the Wairarapa and Manawatu Gorge, and Wanganui to Taranaki, with ultimate exteusion to join the line from Auckland to Cambridge, the junction to be effected as soon as political circumstances permit. The other main line to be in the Middle Island, leading from Invercargill via Dunedin, Oaraaru, Timaru, and Temuka, to Waiau-ua, up the Hope branch of that river, down the Ahaura to G-reyinouth, theace south to Ross, and north to Beefbon, with ultimate extension to Nelson and Picton. The company to purchase all existing lines and plant in both islands, including the Lytteiton and Christen ureh railway, at a valuation not exceeding original cost- Provision to be made for further extension when required
hv the Government. The cost of the lines not to exceed £S,OOO per mile, including rolling stock. The consideration to be a guarantee of 5| per cent, on the capital expended* for a period of forty years. Chktstchurch, August 1. A new Canterbury Club has been started. Considerable anxiety is felt regarding the ships Agamemnon and Benmore, from London, both overdue. Rivekton*, August 1. The following is the result of the polling at the election of two Councillors to-day : — For North Ward, J. L. M' Donald, 29 ; J. Petchell,2l ; for South Ward, Josiah Beer, 15 ; 11. B. Cassels, 10. Messrs M'Donald and Beer were there- . fore declared duly elected.
