MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

Afc the meeting of the Town Council lasfc night, the Mayor and all the Councillers were present^ with the exception of Councillor Tapper. The following letter from the Governor of the Gaol, addressed to His Worship the Mayor, was read : — Sib, — I have the honor to report that there are at present nine prisoners employed at work for the Corporation under the charge of one warder, which I consider insufficient for their safe custody, and therefore beg to suggest that one of the laborers be deputed to work with the gang, to render any assistance, if required at any time, to the warder in charge. I would further suggest that the Engineer to the Corporation be instructed to visit fche gang as often as possible, to see that the labor of the prisoners is being properly executed, and to give any advice the warder may require for the furtherance of such work.— l have, &c, W. Fraser. On the motion of Councillor Goodwillie, seconded by Councillor Garthwaite, it was resolved that the Mayor be requested to arrange that one of the workmen should work with the prison gang, and assist the warder if found necessary, and that the Surveyor's attention be drawn to the paragraph in the letter regarding the propriety of assisting fche warder with advice. A letter was read from Sub«lnspector Fox, recommending Sergeant Fleming, now stationed at Winton, bufc shortly to be removed to Invercargill, for the appointment of Inspector of Nuisances. It was agreed that the appointment should be made in accordance with the recommendation. The following resolutions, passed by the", Public Works Committee, were read : — lst. That the Town Clerk be authorised to complete the agreement with fche contractor for gravel by arranging for two of fche Corporation workmen to do a fair portion of the stripping, the prisoners not being available for the work. 2nd. Recommend the Council to offer Mr Cameron Qd per yard for earth delivered in the hollow afc the eastern corner of Tay and Clyde streets. 3rd. Recommend that the hole at the corner of Spey and Kelvin streets be only temporarily repaired, but that the repairing of the drain in Esk street east, as referred to in the Surveyor's report of 18th inst., be left over until the Council has decided on the main system of drainage. 4th. Recommend thafc the Surveyor be informed thafc the Council contemplated putting in new sleepers in the crossings only where necessary from the old ones being decayed, and that where new crossings are put in, the original form of crown should be continued ; and with reference to the clause in the Surveyor's report, relative to Btone crossings, your committee cannot recommend any departure from the plan of repairing the crossings with timber already resolved upon by the Council. Thut the Clerk request the Surveyor to report on tho petition for drain in Yarrow-street. The recommendations were considered seriilim, and after discussion adopted without alteration. The sum of £35 was ordered to be paid to the contractor for removing the engine house, as progress payment. Plans were ordered to be prepared for draining Yarrow street. On the suggestion of Councillor Pratt, the Mayor stated that he would write to the chairman of the Board of Health, to ascertain what, if any, action was being taken by that body, ih the view of possible danger from the introduction of contagious disease.
