THE INTERNATIONAL BOAT-RACE.
On 24th April, the Inman Company's steamer, City of Montreal, Captain Kennedy, arrived in the Mersey from NewYork, and among the passengers were the American representative crew, who have been selected from the Atalanta Club to row a four-oared race against a picked crew of the London Bowing Club, which was expected to come off between Putney and Mortlake, on Monday, the 10th June. The names of the American crew are as follow : — Messrs Eussel Withers, M.D., stroke, lOst. 101b. ; Theodore Van Eaden, No. 3, 10 st. 101b. ; Alexander Handy, No. 2, 95t. 121b. ; and Edward Smith, bow, lOst. ; their reserve man being Mr Leander Waterbury, lOst 101b. The Atalantas have brought two boats with them, one of which will be their racing boat, the other for practice. As was the case in the race between the Oxford and Harvard crews, four years ago, the crew of the London Eowing Club will have the advantage in weight over the Atalantas ; but the latter believe that they can get on better without a coxswain thau the London crew, although the latter are, of course, more familiar with the course. "We understand that I much of the care and responsibility of the undertaking will devolve upon one of the actual rowers in the American crew, and that Mr Edward Smith, who pulls bow-oar in the Atalanta's boat, will steer it by means of a little contrivance on hia stretcher, which he can work with hia foot, and which will be connected with, the rudder by copper wires running along the boat. Mr G-ulston, who pulls No. 2 in the London boat, will also steer by some apparatus managed by the feet. In noticing the departure of the Atalantas, 1 the New York Herald says : — " It seems j hard that Mr O'Neill, one of their best j men, should have been left behind, and, good men as they undoubtedly are, yet ! the fact remains that the four gentlemen who sail for England to meet her best known oarsmen in friendly strife have yet to prove their title to the first place among those here at home who row purely for the love of it."
