"We compile the following commercial report from our Melbourne files to the 29th ult : — The arrival of the E.M.S. Bangalore at the Heads before the branch steamer was telegraphed at Adelaide, took some of our mercantile community by surprise. The news is not of an exciting character. Shipments of many goods are extremely light, for instance, malt, hops, oeer, in bulk and glass. Brandy is heavy, and also woolpacks. The latest telegrams report the wool market dull Stocks of sugar in London were Tery low, arrivals being short, and higher prices were expected to rule until the beet crop comes in next October ; the bulk of the W.I. crop having, so far, gone to America. Private advices from China are said to report the probability of prices ruling higher for the 1872-73 season's tea. There has been no business of any irrportance concluded in our local markets. Wheat is firm at a little under the highest rates ruling latterly ; sales of western have been made at 6s 9d, short terms, and northern 7s Id. A small parcel of Adelaide was placed at 7s 4d. Flour is dull, and offers to Bell Dixon's Wangaratta at £15 10s were not accepted. Quotations for best brands, £16 5^ to £16 10e. Upwards of 1000 bushels maize were closed for at 3s Id. Oats are not in quite bo good inquiry. 700 bags medium and heavy Tasmanian have been placed at or about 3s 2d. 3500 bushels of malt have changed hands at a Tery fall figure ; quotations range from 10s 6d to 10s 9d. A strong demand exists for fine sugars, and good prices have been obtained from second hands for both grainy counters and crystals. A large business continues to be done in tobaccoes. 50 half tierces Raven twist, to arrive, have been sold for reshipment at Is 7d. Trade sales of ealt are reported at late quotations. Candles, of Brandon's make, have been quitted at 9£d in bond. Deetjen's bottled ale found a buyer at 10s 6d, duty paid.
