Melbourne, June 29. The number of telegrams received on the 27th, the opening day of the British Australian Telegraph, the gap being bridged by the horse express, for transmission to Europe and the East via Port Darwin, was as follows : — Victoria, 11 messages, value £118 ; New South Wales, 10 messages, value £107 ; South Australia 10 messages, value £100. Total number of messages, 31 ; total value, £325. The Ministerial elections have resulted in the return of the Ministers by an overwhelming majority. The Duffy party attempted to influence the elections by rowdyism and intimidation, but without success. The Roman Catholic clergy' also exerted all their influence in favor of the opposition candidates. On Sunday, the 23rd, a pastoral admonition by Dr Goold, Eoman Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne, was read in the Roman Catholic pulpits, declaring that it was necessary for their spiritual interests that the Catholics should vote against the Ministry. This interference has excited great indignation. There has been no fresh outbreak of the foot and mouth disease. A wretched woman, named Maxwell, at Ballarat, was severely beaten by her own son, and left all night in a gutter. She was found dead in the morning. The son has been committed for trial for murder. The Parliament met on the 24tb, when the new Ministry was announced as follows : — Mr Thuraton, Chief Secretary ; Mr Woods, Lands and Works ; Mr Clarkson, Finance ; Mr Swanston, Native Affairs ; and Mr Barrack, a seat in the Cabinet without office. Mr Woods has publicly announced that Commodore Stirling and Sir Alfred Stephen, had informed him that Fiji had been officially recognised. Mr St. Julian had assumed the duties of chief justice, and the first civil sitting of the Supreme Court had commenced. Mr Underwood's murderers had been tried. One was convicted of manslaughter, and the other acquitted. During the trial, further disclosures respecting kidnapping were made. H.M.S. Cossack, Captain King, remains at Fiji. Adelaide, June 24. The Eight Eev. Dr. Quinn, Eoman Catholic Bishop of Bathurst, haß announced that he has made a thorough investigation of the affairs of the diocese, and submitted the particulars to the Pope. A severe storm occurred on the 23rd, during which the roof was blown off Puplett's wholesale grocery store. Hart's flour-mill has been Btopped for want of coal. In the Assembly on the 27th, the Treasurer stated that an offer had been received from Melbourne to construct the Trans- Australian Kail way for a concession of 100,000,000 acres, but the offer was so vague that they could do nothing until they received further information which had been asked for. Mr Derrington has given notice for the insertion of a clause in the Licensed Victuallers Act abolishing barmaids. The black-leg disease is killing cattle in the country. The adrance in copper is beneficially affecting shares. The Hon. Thomas Elder reports that the Grounthal copper mine, about 30 miles from Adelaide, will become a second Burra. Hoba.bt Town, June 25. A landslip occurred on the 24th on the Launceston and Western Railway, and, according to the Examiner, an interruption of traffic for an indefinite period, in consequence of the impecuniosity of the company, may possibly occur. ______^_ — _^
