INTERCOLONIAL.
The following information, taken from the Otago Times, was brought by the Bangitoto, which arrived at Hokitika on the 27th ult .- — Melbotjeue, June 22. A great yield has been obtained from the Daylesford mine. 360 ounces of gold were obtained from 12 tons of stone. In the case of Clampit v. Dr Blair, the plaintiff was nonsuited. AppeU, a levanting Sandhurst sharebroker, was intercepted on board the mail steamer at the Heads, and taken prisoner with a large sum of money in his possession. " Captain Moonlite," the Egerton Bank robber, and one of the gaol breakers at Ballarat, has been retaken, with two others. An organisation, consisting of Messrs Coppin, Harwood, Stewart, and Hennings, has been formed to rebuild the Theatre Eoyal. A proposal has also been made to rebuild the Opera House. Kate Vinson, nee Warde, the actress, is dead. Great excitement prevails regarding electioneering matters. Jackson, who was found guilty of an outrage on an old woman at Footscray, was sentenced to death, but the sentence was afterwards commuted to twenty
$ years' imprisonment, the first three years ; in irons. i The Hon. Mr Casey has been appointed Minister of Agriculture. Judge Barry is seriously indisposed. Miss Emily Burchall, governess to a , Mr Orr,ofHeatheote,has been committed f for trial for infanticide. F A disgracefully rowdy scene took place * at an election meeting at Sandhurst, i At the nominations for the re-election r of the new Ministry five of the latter ■ were opposed, and two were unopposed. j It was believed that all would be re- ) elected. The Times and Mines, the late Ministei rial journal, received at the rate of £7000 ! a year in Government advertisements. ; It is determined by the new Govern- : ment to nullify the San Francisco postal i ' arrangement between Messrs Webb and ; Duffy. Mr Hoey's appointment has been rescinded. The new Government promises not to interfere in the fiscal policy at present. James Stevenson, newly arrived by the Benledi, from London, Bhot himself at Queenscliff. Wheat is quoted at 7a to 7a 4d. Oats are at 3s to 3s 3d ; a line of 3000 bushels of New Zealand was placed at the former price. Sugars are being firmly held for an advance. Sydney. Nicholls and Lester, the Parramatta river murderers, have been executed. Both of them confessed their guilt, acknowledged the justice of their sentence, and expressed a hope that young men would take warning and profit by their sad example. Lester said that the news of his untimely end would be the death of bis mother, who resides in England. The Annie Fish takes 3403 bales of wool to San Francisco. Krohman's claim at Tambaroora continues richer than ever. H.M.S. Blanche is to continue her cruise among the South Sea Islands longer than was originally intended. Some cattle imported by the Eowe were pronounced diseased, and were not allowed to land. The Government will probably accede to the proposition for the abolition of the tonnage dues. The Government undertaker was guilty of disgraceful conduct in making a public show of the bodies of Nicholls and Lester. The proceeding was promptly stopped. Adelaide. The Government are arranging for the expenditure of £4000 on assisted immigration. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Cox, a commercial clerk, on a charge of forgery. He has left the country. Six new copper mines have been started. Bills have been introduced to amend the Distillation and Marine Board Acts. The Trans-continental Railway Bill is opposed in the Assembly. Flour is at £13 to £14, and wheat at 5s lOd to 6a. Newcastle. Three colored seamen belonging to the ship Swallow stabbed three white men belonging to the ship Dexter. The condition of one of the latter is considered dangerous. Beisbane. The Marine Board acquitted Captain Cooper of the wilful loss of the Young Australia, but considered that his conduct showed error of judgment.
