NO RATS IN THE GARRET!

SlB, — Having seen Mr Carden's effusion in your issue on Tuesday last, I have to express my regret that he should so quicklyJiave shown the " white feather" — to use hit own words, given us an exemplification that " discretion is the better part of valor." I must however admire his generalship. His prompt retreat has saved him from well-merited punishment. Notwithstanding his boasted prowess, he is evidently completely vanquished after the first round, and having thrown up the sponge in token of defeat, it would be cowardly and un-English to strike a fallen adversary. Ido not contend for victory, but for truth, and if he will only now earnestly and prayerfully ask, with Pilate, " What is truth f " he may yet find it, to his present joy and his eternal welfare. I trust he will dismiss all anxiety on my account. lam in good health and happy, and thankful to inform him, I can quote a little Latin as well as be, and through God's abounding mercy can say, " Habeo sanam mentem in copore sano," which, for the satisfaction of some, and to save him from the trouble of referring to his Latin dictionary, I will interpret for him — " I have a sound mind, in a sound body." — I am, Ac, A Pkotestant, but hot a Peesbyteeian. Invercargill, 19th June, 1872.
