INSURRECTION IN MANILLA.
: The Hongkong Daily Press, of Bth February, gives the following particulars of a serious insurrection in Manilla in a letter dated January 28 : — '-' Last Sunday Manilla was thrown into a great state of alarm and excitement, in consequence of a serious outbreak amongst the natives, who suddenly rose up and took possession of the Cavite Arsenal and Fort, killing'! several, Spaniards. But for the prompt manner in which the Governor acted,, the affair would have assumed most serious dimensions. It is said that a secret society has been formed, having for its object the entire expulsion of foreigners. Some thirty to forty people, • occupying good' positions, are in" custody. The Governor, on -receiving the information, immediately- went to the barracks, and ordered the 'native soldiers to march at once, and by this prompt action he gave them no time to do otherwise. The rebels held Cavite from. .Saturday, night until Monday morning, havjng full charge of the guns, stores," J anrl" in fact everything. The Governors-o rders were to shoot everyone they came aeppsa,- • and/some 200 were despatched, not however before they had killed 29 Spaniards. A batch of 30 to 40 are to he shot this morning. On Sunday morning the town presented quite a martial appearance, the troopß passing to and fro in all directions, and on Monday there was a very uneasy feeling among the people. Aery of fire was raised, and crowds rushed about in all directions, but the alarm turned out to be false. After the arrest of tbe more important rioters, and the return of the j troops-, on Tuesday, matters quieted; down again, and we are now_gaing on as usual. One bad. sign, is that several priests are mise<j. up iv the affair,' but the Governor is not the man to be overruled by priests or anyone else. One of them went to him on Tuesday, asking him to spa:re the prisoners who had been brought in. His auswer was, " I know my business ; you go and attend to yours. I shall shoot the rebels ; you can. pray for their souls."
