SPECIAL TELEGRAMS.
A special telegram to the Bank of New Zealand says that the second instalment of the million loan has been placed at 100£. Wool is quiet, pending the sales on the 11th. Prices, however, are very firm. Latest London advices report that a calm followed the Jast sales in the wool market. The feeling is wavering. There is a doubt lest supplies should turn out smaller than anticipated. There seems every probability of a maintenance of prices at the present level. Preserved meats, it is feared*, ma 7 &H in price as the season advanced- The following are the latest quotations: — Mutton, 61b tins, 4£d to 5d ; 41b tins, 6£d to 6|d ; 21b tins, 6£d to 7£d. Beef, tfJb tins, 4fd to s}d ; 41b tins, 6|d ; 21b tins, 6U to 7d. There is a strong demand for N6W Zealand hemp, and a further advance has taken place of 30s per ton. The improvement in cleaning has had the effect of enhancing the price. Sales ex Halcione, from Wellington, have been effected at from L3l 15s to L 36 15s. A special telegram from London says the Cabinet will not resign. They promise not to endow a Catholic University in Ireland.
