PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.
Wednesday, Ist Mat. Mr Reid laid on the table Mr M'Ker row's report respecting the sale of land to Mr Clarke, on Moa Flat. It was decided that the report should be printed. Mr Tolmie moved the adoption of the reply to His Honor's address, which was simply an echo of the speech. Messrs M'G-lashan, Mervyn, Thomson, Cargill, Reid, Huteheaon, and M'Kenzie took part in the debate which followed, and the reply was adopted. On the motion of Mr Reid, it was .resolved that addresses should be presented
to Hid Honor, recommending that land be set apart in the following districts for the purposes mentioned : lv Winton township, for educational purposes. For Municipal purposes at East Winton, and Winton. At East Winton, for edacational purposes, and for a public cemetery. At Invercargill, for a Grammar School, la Winton Hundre 1, for a public cemetery. On the motion of Mr Reil, the Council agreed to concur in the suggestion contained in His Honor's Message, No. 1, approving o' the sections in Long Bush and Elbow townships being fixed at the size surveyed, and the upset price as recommended. The Council also approved of the nominations notified in His Honor's Message, No. 2, of Messrs J. H. Baker and T. Hughan, as assessors under the Otago Waste Lands Act, 1866. Thursday, 2nd Mat. On the motion of Mr Eeid it was resolved that an address should be presented to i/ne Superintendent, recommending that 3000 acres, situated in the Jacob's River Hundred, should be set apart for the endowment of a trust for the Harbor of Riverton. On the motion of Mr Reid an endowment of 2000 acres in the Kauroo District was set apart for the Oamaru Hospital ; and on the motion of Mr Turnbull, a further amount of 2000 acres ia the Marewhenua District was devoted to the same purpose. On Mr Mervyn's motion, amended by Mr Shepherd, the correspondence between the Superintendent, and Messrs Stafford, Bell, and Shepherd, relative to the surrender of land for settlement in the Ida Valley, without compensation, was ordered to be printed. The Riverfcon Reserves Management Bill (vesting administration of Municipal Reserves in Town Council), the Invercargill Reserves Management Bill, the Police Ordinance (Southland) Repeal Bill (to assimilate Police Ordinances throughout the Province), and the Licensed Carriages Bill, were read a second time, on the motion of Mr Bathgate, considered in Committee, and reported to the Council without amendment. Mr Bathgate gave notice of the third reading of the Invercargill Reserves Management Bill for next day. The other Bills were read a third time and passed. Friday, 3rd May. The Hon. Dr. Menzies' motion for the production of the correspondence, relating to the Oreti Railway Arbitration case, was carried. The debate on the Invercargill Reserves Management Bill was postponed till Tuesday. The Shire Councils Bills was read a first time; the second reading being adjourned for a full attendance of members.
