THE HALF-HOLIDAY.

Sib, — I really cannot see the force of tbe Invercargill storekeepers shutting their shops on Wednesdays. Who is the holiday meant for ? Is it for the merchants or for the working men ? To my mind it should be for the latter. I hardly see that a holiday is wanted at all. Surely the pressure of business is not so great. Perhaps there may be some who are glad of a few hours' recreation ; if so, all 1 can say is, by all means take it, but let it be on the Saturday afternoon. I believe I can say, almost with certainty, that the majority of the working men would prefer the end of the week. Tkey would enjoy themselves more profitably, and be better prepared for the Sabbath. — I am, &c, A Mechanic. 3rd May.
