At the half yearly meeting of the Bank of New Zealand the report showed a net profit on the 31st March, after providing for all bad and doubtful debts, of £41,995, the balance from last half year being £7,604 A dividend was declared of 15 per cent, per annum, leaving £7600 undivided. The Governor, accompanied by Mr M' Lean, arrived at the Thames yesterday, having crossed overland from Kati Kati to Ohinemuri. They visited the leading mines, and reached Auckland last night. Bitter complaints are coming in from the country districts of the destruction, of crops by pheasants. - A volunteer representative writes to the Southern Cross, accusing Colonel Harrington of showing a strong partiality towards the Otago men, and of unfair treatment of the other representatives. The writer also complains that the stewards of the ball at Christchurch left the strangers among the representatives to watch the people dancing, having secured all the partners themselves. Wellington, April 25. The enquiry into the charges of cruelty against the keeper and matron of the Lunatic Asylum at Karori has been commenced. The evidence of a female attendant shows that patients were systematically beaten and ill-treated. Two female patients said that they had nothing to complaiu of, but admitted being beaten. Toe Provincial Government has engaged Mr M/Leod, M.H.R., to go to Canada for the purpose of procuring 500 immigrants. He does not leave till after the session of Assembly. The Provincial Q-ovemment has also arranged with Mr Inglis to go home for 220 Dutch immigrants, to settle them on 250-acre blocks at Fitzherbert. The General Government pays £7 10a per head, and the province the remainder. Mr Inglis pays for the land when settled on. He leaves to morrow via Melbourne. Nkw Plymouth, April 25.
