WASTE LAND BOARD.
The District Waste Land Board met on Friday. The Commissioner of Crowa Lands, and Messrs Duadas, M" Arthur, and Baker -were present. A letter was read from the Provincial Secretary, to the effect that the 25,604 acres awarded by the arbiters to the contractors of the Winton Railway was inadditiou to the 4,000 acres granted to them before the arbitration. This, with the land already given for the Kew Diversion, will make the quantity required for all claims about 32,000 acres. The quantity authorised to be given for the Winton line was 25,000 acres. It was considered that this amount had been already exhausted, and the Board resolved to dueling sanctioning any further free grants until it was ascertained whether or not this were the case. Two applications from Messrs Squires, for 200 acres in the Oreti Hundred, under the railway contract arrangements, were therefore held over. Applications for 100 acres in the Winton Hundred, by W. H. King, and 32 acres, section 3, block 20, Inyercargill Hundred, by W. Frager, were granted. Application for 101 acres, Forest Hill Hundred, bvThos. M'Lean, was postponed till next sitting. On the application of Mr Russell, it was resolved to declare 20 acres of the Waikiwi Bush Reserve, at the rear of section 5, block 15, open for sale. Arthur Rolfe applied to have section 28, block 4, Aparima Hundred, now temporarily reserved, thrown open for sale. It was resolved to make the Bection an educational reserve. A letter from Mr J. F. Dundas, dated Bth inst., was read, to the effect that the District Road Board for Hokanui proposed taking a road through the Otapiri Bush, behind the pre-emptive right of Run No. 138, which, not having been surveyed, and the ground being very steep, was likely to result in the unnecessary destruction of the timber. The interference of the Land Board was requested to prevent this. <s Mr Dundas having vacated his seat, it was resolved to request the chairman of the Road Bo.ird to describe the route of the intended road, with a view to prevent the unnecessary destruction of the timber. Mr Murdoch obtained a sawmill license, and a reserve for cutting timber, in the Waikiwi Bush.
