moved as an amendment that the half-holiday should be observed on Saturday afternoons. He did so pro forma, in order that the matter might be fairly tested. Seconded by Mr W. Sloan. It wn3 suggested by Mr Ekensteen, that- as Wednesday would be a mwh. more suitable da.y for tie butchors closing, Wednes lay should be substituted for Thursday in tho motion. This was agreed to, and the motion, thus altered, and amendment wero submitted to the vote, when the former was carried by 10 to 7. Mr K. Erskino proposed, and Mr R. D. Yule Bocon_ded,' the next resolution :—" That the proposed arrangement take effjet from tho first Wednesday in May." Ai an a.nnd uant, it was proposed by Mr Hall, an 1 seconded by Mr Rodgers : — " That it take etf jet from the first Weinesday in October." Tho motion was carried without dissent. At this stage, Mr Lumsdan and several other gentlemen arrived, whan Mr Lumsden repeated tho opinion previously expressed — that unless the retail spirit merchants agreed to close their premises, he could not have anything to do with tho movement. In reply to a question, Mr Lumsden stited that if tho proposal met with the general concurrence of the tradespeople, he would not be an excepti >n to the rule. A number of those present then signed a document embodying the result of the meeting, and Mt-ssrs B. Ekenst< en and A. Smith were appointed to obtain further signatures.
