MEETING OF SOUTHLAND PRESBYTERY.

The Presbytery of Southland met on Wednesday, the 10th inst. There were present the Revs. Thomas Alexander, Moderator, Andrew Stevens, A. H. Stobo, and James M. Thomson, ministers ; and William Fraser, elder. Mr Stevens was elected Moderator for the next twelve months. The Clerk intimated that the Rev. Charles Eoss had left Eiverton about the beginning of February, that Mr Blake, according to the request of the Presbytery, had be6n sent down for five or six weeks, and that the Rev. Alfred Arnott was now supplying for two months. It was agreed that any further steps for supply which should be needful before next ordinary meeting of Presbytery, be left to the congregation and Church Extension Committee, and, that failing other supply, the brethrea should revert to the arrangement already -agreed to among themselves. The Clerk laid on the table extract minute of Synod anent the employment of lay agents and students in Home Mission work. It was agreed to take into consideration this matter, and the report of the committee thereon at next ordinary meeting. It was also agreed to take up the remit of Synod anent the English Presbyterian Hymn-book at next ordinary meeting. The Presbytery enjoined the various ministers to make special reference in their public services to God's merciful dealings with us with respect to the ingathering of the recent harvest. Mr Thomson made application on behalf of the Committee at Winton for the grant of £250 for a manse. The Presbytery instructed Mr Thomson to call the attention of the Committee to the law of the church on the subject — that no grants can be sanctioned until plans and specifications are submitted to the Presbytery and approved by them, and notification has been made to the Presbytery that the contract for building has been entered into. The Presbytery proceeded to examine the Records of Sessions and Deacons' Courts. The Presbytery then adjourned, to meet at Invei cargill, on Wednesday, 26th June next, at 11 a. m.
