A lettee which appeared in our last issue called attention to a very important matter, viz., the new arrangements about to be made for the performance of the San Francisco mail service. No definite information has yet been received as to how the service will hereafter be arranged. The opinion Beems to prevail in Auckland that the large steamers will call there as heretofore, and then proceed from thence to Melbourne via Sydney, returning by the south of the Middle Island, and calling at Port Chalmers. On the other hand it is asserted that New Zealand will have to be fed by a branch service from some port of call in the Pacific. As already stated, however, nothing definite is yet known on the subject ; but as the latter course seems to be the one most likely to be adopted, we would suggest that the Chamber of Commerce should take some action in the matter, in order that the claims of Bluff Harbor as a port of call should be recognised in the new arrangements.
