The American Minister to Japan has accepted a similar mission to that of the late Mr Anson Burlinghame's to the great powers. Prince Gortschakoff seems disposed to support hisprotege Oatacasey, refusing to accredit any successor to Washington at present. The naval preparations for Cuba continue, but the Government intend observing the policy of neutrality as long as possible. Large discoveries of gold have been made on the Peace River.
