COMMERCIAL.
The following has been collected aa Customs Revenue during the week ending Saturday, March 16th :—
Mr F. B. White, forwarding agent, "Winton, reports that the rate of cartage is now as follows : — From Winton to Kingston, £2 per ton ; from to Kingston, £2 10s per .ton.
D. Macrorie, auctioneer, reports : — On Saturday the attendance in the yards was . but scant, and 'only one lot, a superior unbroken mare in foal, and with foal at foot, changed hands at £20. In the evening the Bale of fancy goods attracted attention, but the bidding ,waß not of SU encouraging nature, though the most of the goods were quitted. In private transactions, however, there is a manifest improvement, both at regards investments in town and country jproperties and stock. I have placed under offer forcaßha block in Oreti Hundred at vendor's 'quotation, besides other suburban lots, and among several vendors 1 have submitted for one week several mobß of long-woolled*rams and tup lambs at rates for the latter (about 100 head) varying from £2 to £4 ; for 2-tooth rams (about 150) £4 to £6. Those inspected have given full satisfaction as regards the class of stock the district can produce, but pending the approval of some lots previously submitted in the Dunedin neighborhood, so as to arrive at the number required, transactions could not be closed. A good demand exists also for store wethers, and old ewes, and I have alao submitted offers for both classes, for the latter ranging from 2s 6d to '3s 6d, according to quality. A slight reaction is : apparent as regards cattle, a demand for stores having again sprung up, and as the operations of -the -Winton. Company are now commencing, there is every hope that present rates will be folly sustained. Invercargill, March 18, 1872.
