In the first ten months of 1871, no less than 792,332 sheep and lambs were imported into the United Kingdom. The number averaged 2,600 a day. Their value is declared at £1,523,834. Dr Short, the Superintendant oi Vaccination at Madras, has trained a number of women as vaccinators to attend on native ladies. The coal-fields of Western Virginia cover an area of 15,000 square mile*, or about three times the coal area of Great Britain.
