MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
The Council met last evening. PreBent — His Worship the Mayor, and all the Councillors. Minutes of last meeting having been read and confirmed, the question of the purchase of a safe was considered, the lowest tender for a s'ze 4J (a larger size than contemplated), being that of Messrs Oliver and Ulph, Dunedin, at £22 10s. j Councillor Goodwillie moved, and CniJOPillor Garth waite seconded, " That further enquiry be made before conclud- ' ing the purchase." Councillor B) sckwood moved, and , Councillor Lumsd'-n seconded an amend- , meet. " That the tender of Messrs Oliver and Ulph be accented," each believing that the additional s-ize was an advantage. The amendrnenb was carried. An application from Mr J. T. Martin, j in reference to the cost of a drain in Spey I street, and seeking to be reimbursed a portion of the outlay, was, on the motion of Councillor Garthwaite, seconded by Councillor Goodwillie, ordered to be laid on the table until nest meeting. A letter from the Inspector of Surveys, relative to the employment of the Town Surveyor in the survey of the esplanade, was considered, Mr Baker questioning whether, as the Town Surveyor's name did not appear in the list of authorised surveyors, he could be employed on the survey. Councillor Garthwaite moved, and Councillor Lumsden seconded, " That Mr Baker be instructed to make the survey." The matter was allowed to stand over until the Town Surveyor could be seen. A request from Captain Elles for leave to take gravel was granted, subject to conditions. The report of the Public Works Committee was read, and the items taken seriatim. The report recommended that the obtaining of metal at present be not proceeded with, as better facilities for obtaining it, it was believed, would shortly exist, and recommended the allowance of the carting of gravel for a footpath in Gala street, between Dee and Deveron street?, which was assented to. The purchase of timber and nails for box drains was also authorised, as was the provision of a yard and rough shed for the tools, and the branding of the same, the site selected for the shed being on section 1, block 13. Certain repairs in Conon street, with suggestions for the further employment of the prisoners in the formation of the Don streft footpath, and the employment of additional men as laborers, were assented to. On the motion of Councillor Garthwaite, seconded by Councillor Blackwood, the Town Surveyor was directed to survey and peg the footpaths about to be made, to the permanent level, after which the report of the Committee was adopted as a whole. The Finance Committee's rep orb, recommending: a series of rules for the conduct of a Fire Brigade, was next read, and on the motion of Councillor Boss, seconded by Councillor Pratt, was adopted. Councillor Goodwillie moved, and Councillor Pratt seconded — " That all workmen employed by the Council shall be expected to become members of the Fire Brigade, and that advertisements be insarted in the papers calling for applications from persons willing to become members of the Brigade under the conditions fixed by the Council." Councillor Lumsden objected to the motion as irregular, the report of the Committee having beeu adopted. The motion was afterwards amended as follows — " That all workmen employed by the Council be requested to join the Tire Brigade," and was, in its amended form, carried. The report of the Cemetery Committee, recommending the carrying out of necessary repairs, the erection of a fence, reducing for the present the size of the Cemetery, together with new front fence, was adopted with some modifications. Specifications for the repair and gravelling of the west side of Dee street were adopted, and advertisements directed to be inserted for that and other works.
