ELBO W.

(FBOM OtTB OTO COBRESPOKDENT.) February 21st, 1872. Harvest work is now well advanced, and I am sorry to report that crops of all kinds are very poor, potatoes especially being likely to be scarce this year in the district. At the Lowther Conrt yesterday, before Messrs Cowan, M'Kellar, and Butler, J.P.'b, the following debt cases were disposed of :r-M'Lean v. Baker — claim for £11 19s 6d. The case was dismissed on account of plaintiff not Sutting in an appearance in time. TPherson v. Hughes, £2 10s. Settled out of Court. At the Nokomai, on the 15th ult., before J. Nugent Wood, Esq., 8.M., Margaret "Whittaker was charged with using threatening language to Charles Henry Come, while in the execution of his duty as special bailiff at Nokomai. The defendant was fined £2, and costs, £2 6s 6d. Coulara v. Bartley was a claim for £21 5s 7d. A plea of indebtedness having been made, a verdict was given for the amount claimed, with costs, 2 is. Whittaker v. Corrie, claim for goods sold and delivered. Verdict for plaintiff for £2 12s 3d, and costs, 9s. D. A. Cameron sued — Whittaker for allowing five head of great cattle to depasture on complainant's run, No. 398, without his consent. The Magistrate awarded damages, 20s, and costs, lls. On the 17th ult. a concert was given in the Nokomai schoolhouse in aid of the school funds. There was a crowded attendance, and a very pleasant evening was spent. After the concert, dancing was kept up for several hours. Mr Henry Lapham, the teacher, the school committee, and every person having a hand in the affair, deserve great praise for the cheap night's amusement supplied. The Nokomai Big Company is all the talk in the district, and if it only turns out half as good as we expect, we will put the business people of Invercargill and Queenstown on their legs again. The miners in Paddy's Alley are reaping a rich harvest on the quiet. Collins and party's claim is paying handsomely, and Young and party are making good wages. The " Chinkeys" are still numerous, and doing well in Victoria Gully. The inhabitants in the Mararoa district are very much dissatisfied with the new mail arrangements via Riverton. A petition has been forwarded to the post office authorities praying tnat the mails may be sent as heretofore from the Elbow, and also for the establishment of a post office at Murrill's Hotel, Mararoa. The present system is very loose, and the sooner the Government alters it the better.
