THE VOLUNTEERS.

♦ . - — A handicap match came off at the butts on Saturday last, when 25 members of the two companies competed at the following ranges, five shots at each, viz , 200, 400, and 500 yards, the first standing, the second kneeling, and the third any position. Ho prize was to bo given for any score under 35 points, the consequence being that out of the seven prizes offered there were only three carried off, as follows : —

We understand the remaining prizes will be competed for at an early date. On Monday evening, the local volunteers mustered in force, for the monthly inspection of arms, the members present being as follows : — Staff and Band, Sergt. Paxton, and 25 bandsmen. Artillery, 1 captain, 2 lieutenants, 3 sergeants, and 35 rank and file; total, 46. No. 1 Rifles, 1 captain, 1 lieutenant, 1 ensign, 3 sergeants, 26 rank and file ; total, 32. Cadets, 2 sergeants, 26 rank and file ; total, 28. Captain Harvey, being senior otticer, was in command. After b«ing minutely inspected, and put through manual and platoon exercise, the volunteers marched through the town, preceded by the Band, being put through various movements during their progress. On Thursday morning the firing in the first stage for the General Government district prizes took place. There were seven competitors, none of whom succeeded in gaining the necessary number of points. This i* no doubt to be attributed to the fact of a'strong wind 'blowing across the range at 200 yards, which increased to a perfect gale at the longer ranges. In consequence of the date being fixed by the Government, the firing could not be postponed. In the second set the firing takes place this and to-morrow mornings.
