THE BLUFF ROAD SAW MILLS.

Sir, — I am again compelled to trouble you about the obstructions made on the roadway by the saw-millers on the Bluff Road. Ido this in the hope that without further notice the present state of things may be altered by the proprietors, or personally I shall have to take the matter up to see what legal remedy exists. Ido not intend my remarks to apply to one more than other of the establishments, because all are more or less guilty, either of seriously obstructing the roadway or of endangering the public safety by the abominable tramways, or whatever they may be called, crossing the road to the various mills. At mill No. 1 the roadway is safe, and except a serpentine track, about the width of a dray or a trifle more, literally blocked up with timber and waste, and the crossings are of a very dangerous character. At No. 2 matters are not quite as bad, the proprietor having scarcely had time for as much accumulation. The tramway here shows a thoroughly reckless disregard of life and limb. At No. 3 the tramway has been reasonably well laid down, and if suffered at all needs not much to be complained of, but when I passed here recently I found a laden timber carriage drawn across probably two thirds of the roadway, and a settler with his wife and others in a dray who had a close shave to pull through, and who as a consequence were complaining of the obstruction which was made all the more dangerous by the fact that a few yards further on a fire had been lighted by the road side, and a man belouging apparently to the mill was conducting some out-door mechanical operations. I remember a few days since to have read a complaint by one of the saw-millers about the hardship of certain government regulations, and while I wish all to get justice, and would be sorry to hamper any industry, yet the convenience of any interest must not be allowed to injure the public. A word to the wise is sufficient. — I am, &c, Tbavelleb. — _»- — —
