MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

The Council met last night. Present — The Mayor, and Councillors Garthwaite, Blackwood, Pratt, Lumsden, Jaggers, GoodwilhVi, and Boss. The following communication, from Mr D. M'Arthur, was read : — " I have to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 9th inst., and would have replied sooner had I not been in correspondence with the Government on the subject. I now write to say bo, and that on concluding said correspondence you shall hear from me. To prevent any misunderstanding, however, I may state that I am not aware of b«ing in vany way indebted to the Provincial Government.. -If on adjusting accounts I am found to-be so, I shall be glad to act accordingly." After discussion, it was resolred that a copy of the letter be sent to the Government, requesting it to cause the amount due on account of the cemetery, and which the Government has already ordered to be paid over to the Corporation to be paid as early as possible ; the letter to be accompanied by a statement of the present condition of the cemetery. . The .following telegram from the Mayor of Greymouth, dated the 12th instant, was read : — •' A disastrous flood has occurred here. A large portKHCfof the town iB swept away. Some hundreds .of persons left houseless and destitute. Local efforts insufficient to relieve distress. Your bind assistance is requested in obtaining contributions." On the recommendation of the Mayor, it was agreed that a public meeting should be called for Monday evening to take steps in the matter. A summons from Mr E. Rogers, claiming payment of £60, was read, and a motion passed to instruct the solicitor to take steps to defend it. For the supply of 500 yards of gravel, tenders were considered. Two tenders for the same amount (£56 ss) created a discussion, which eventually resulted in that of George Clark being accepted. __,__«■». I i
