A DISCLAIMER.

TO THE EDITOB OP THE TIHES.

Sib, — In connection with the search made for the Chinaman charged with selling spurious gold, a statement appears in the last issue of the Times to the effect that the house kept by me was watched by the police. I wish to say that I afforded the officers every facility in the prosecution of their duty, and freely gave them as much information as I was possessed of. I deem it due to myself to give this explanation of the matter, as some people might suppose from your report that I had been endeavoring to screen the Chinaman. For the correctness of my statement I refer you to the Inspector. — I am, «fee, John Madden. Melbourne Hotel, Jan. 25, 1872.
