The coastal steamers Storm Bird and Samson liad an exciting race during their passage from Port Chalmers. They both left that port at the same time, and during the first half of the passage they ran together, neck ana neck. The Storm Bird thereafter shot ahead, and kept the paddle steamer aatern during the remainder of the distance, arriving at the Invercargill wharf an hour and a half before the Samson. They left Port Chalmers at 10.30 a.m. on Friday, and the Storm Bird, which was deeply laden, arrived at the jetty at 8.4"» am. on Saturday, a head wind from Si. and W., with a nasty chopping sea, being encountered during the passage.
