DUNEDIN.

Messrs Driver, Stewart, & Co. report for the week ending 13th January : — Fat. Cattle. — The market was again fully supplied with 60 head cattle, only about half of whiehtwere of good quality, and realised about 2Qs per lOOibs ; the remainder brought little over store prices. The continued drought has quite destroyed , moßt of the grass paddocks for this season, and ,we do not anticipate that an over supply of prime beef will come forward for any length of time. ..Fat Sheep.— We also expect that the same cause will materially affect the supply of prime mutton.. Only, 43o ordinary merino wethers were penned this;, week r , and brought 6fl 6d ;to 7s. Lambs, 7s to 10s 6d, according to age and quality. Store Sheep.— rWe . have .placed several lots under offer, and still have enquiries for wethers, both merino, and half-bred, and young well-bred ewes.— W-e-quotemerino- wethers at 4s to 4s 3d j do balf-breda, 5s 6d.to 6s ; merino ewes, 4 and 6 tooth, 4s ■; merino lambs, 7s to 8s per pair ; halfbred do, 9s to 10s per pair. Store Cattle. — Transactions continue limited ; the want of grass has stopped the demand for paddocks, while mixed herds are unsaleable. I Station- Property.-^-Owing to the increased value of wool and preserved meats, we have had •onmerons enquiries .for this description of investment, and several' transactions are pending. On the 24th inst. we will sell by auction, without reserve, two very valuable -properties, viz., Stotfold station, with .19,000 sheep, and Rugged Ridges station, with 25,000 sheep. Both properties .are situated in the Waitaki district. /Wool.— rT"P public sales have been held during theweek, the catalogueseom prising about 800 bales. The attendance of buyers on local, home, and American acconnt was large, and the competition fairly-jpiritedthroughout, light conditioned greasy and well-got up -waehed fleece commanding most attention. About 500 bales were disposed of at auction at>prices ranging ,as follows: — Greasy merino, lOfd to 14fd ; do cross-bred, 11 jd to 15|d ; washed merino, I7d to 2_id ;do cross-bred, 18d | to 21$ d. • We have placed privately during the week about 500 bales at prices fully equal to above quotations. As indicative of the importance to the colony of "the opening up of business jnthis^Btaple with. the United States, we may mention that the barque Sarah, estimated to carry about 3000 bales, is rapidly filling up for Boston and New York; the William Cundall has been chartered to lay on for the ■ame7ports; and for^San Francisco about BOO'^ales ■# Jbave. !; ,hee**fS shipped per United States,, New "Zealand, and Australian mail lin'e'of' steamers p : while' several thousand bales forathe^samsi port await shipment here. Our'

advices from London via San Francisco are exceedingly meagre, limited, in fact, to an expression of opinion as to the probable course of prices at the opening sales of the year, which it is generally expected will rule firm, trade in the manufacturing districts being active, the money market easy, and tbe aspect of affairs political on the whole assuring. In Boston and New York, some business had been dope in Australian and New Zealand wools at 57 to 60 cents per lb. Sheepskins— At auction, about 1000 skms were disposed of at up to 9|d per lb. Demand active. Grain.— Good samples of wheat are scarce, and command from 5s to 5s 3d per bushel ; inferior, unsaleable. Oats in demand, milling worth 2s 2d to 2s 3d } feed, 2s to 2b 2d per bushel. Barley, malting, 3s 9d to 4a.
