♦ "Wellington-, Jan. 8. Mr Brogden's staff has commenced to survey the Hutt line. The carpenters here have all struck, owing to the refusal of the masters to give them the Saturday half-holiday. The Queen's wharf warehouse has been let by auction for three years at a rental of £4010 per annum. Last year it only realised £2400. Late and reliable news from Patea says that there is not the slightest ground for uneasiness regarding the state of the district. "Dtjnebin, Jan. 8. Mr Murray, M.H.R. for Bruce, met his constituents, when a vote was passed approving of his conduct, and condemning the reckless and extravagant policy of the G-overnment. The following sentences have been passed in the Supreme Court : — Edward Clark, forgery and uttering, eight months ; Arthur TDimmock, uttering a forged cheque, two years ; George Grey, attempted arson, three years; Joseph Connor, robbery from the person, four years; Marion Maria Hogan Webb, bigamy, six months. Andrew Anderson, a resident at the Clutha, shot himself while in a state of temporary insanity.
