Beloved Christian Brethren, throughout all Nations, — We are reminded that the present year, replete •with so great and serious events, is drawing to a close, and that another is approaching, with its many and solemn responsibilities. In prospect of the new year we affectionately address you on the subject of United and Universal Prayer. Christians throughout the world have been accustomed for many years past, and with increasing encouragement and advantage, to consecrate the week commencing with the first Sunday in January to united supplication. Day by day in that week they have been brought into sympathy with each other's wants and duties and trials ; with sach other's union in Christ ; with each other's privileges, and with each other's participation in Divine and Eternal realities. Multitudes look forward to its return with gladness because it has been to them a season of spiritual joy and of divine blessing — shewing the faithfulness of God to his promise and the efficacy of United Prayer. "If two of you shall agree on Earth as touching anything that they Bhall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in Heaven." We invite you therefore to make arrangements for Betting apart the week commencing January 7th next, for special thanksgiving, humiliation, and prayer ; and by giving publicity to this invitation endeavor to promote the observance of this Annnal Week of Prayer for the spiritual benefit of those who have not hitherto participated in its privileges. And, suffer us, Beloved Brethren, as the time approaches, and looking to the contentions and controversies engaging men's minds, and unhappily separating true believers who are really (and who ought to be visibly) one in Christ, to beseech you to cultivate one toward another increasingly the excellent gift of " charity," that no divisions be allowed to hinder your coming with "one accord" to the Throne of the Heavenly Grace, or to deprive you of the blessings so largely promised to United Prayer. Let us not forget the solemn admonition — " Grieve not the Holy Spirit whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice : and be ye kind one to another, tender hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you."— Ephes. iv. 30—32. The following topics are suggested as statable for exhortation and prayer on the successive days of meeting : Sunday, Jan. 7. — Sermons : Subject — The Faith once delivered to the Saints, a universal and everlasting bond of union in the Christian Church. The duty of its defence and extension binding on all believers. Monday, Jan. 8. — Thanksgiving : — God's " un?peakable gifts ;" for mercies personal and relative ; for National Mercies ; for the maintenance and restoration of Peace, and for preservation from Famine, and other National Calamities ; for mercies to the Christian Church ; for the progress of Christ's Kingdom, and the usefulness of the Christian Ministry. Tuesday, Jan. 9. — Humiliation; — For personal and national sins, weakness of faith, disobedience and worldliness in the Church. Acknowledgement of the Divine Judgments, confession of unfaithfulness, and prayer for the Revival of Religion, as in past timeß. Wednesday, Jan. 10. — Prayer (intercessory) : — For Families ; for the sons and daughters of Christian parents at home and in other lands ; also for those at school, at colleges and universities ; and for all entering upon commercial or professional duties ; for the increase of spiritual life in those who confess Christ ; for the conversion of the unconverted ; and for the sanctifying of affliction both to parents and Children. Thursday, Jan. 11. — Prayer (intercessory) : —For Kings and all in authority ; for Nations, especially tho&e recently visited with the calamities of war ; for the prevalence ot peace in the counsels of Statesmen ; for righteousness, harmony, and goodwill among all classes ; for the spread of sound knowledge, and for God's blessing upon special efforts to resist the progress of infidelity, superstition, intemperance, and other kinds of immorality. Fbidat, Jan. 12. — Prayer (intercessory) : — For the Christian Church ; for Bishops, Presbjters, Pastors, and Missionaries j for transistors of the Holy Scriptures into various tongues j for Office-bearers, and for Committees, Societies, and Authors engaged in Christian work. Satubday, Jan. 13. — Prayer : — For a larger outpouring of the Holy Spirit ; for the increase of Christian love and holy zeal, and the union of believers in prayer and effort for God's Glory. StiNDAY, Jan. 14. — Sermons — " Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is done in heaven."— Matt. vx. 10. Meetings nightly in the Hall of the Presbyterian Church, at half-past seven.
