COMMERCIAL.
D. Macbobie, Auctioneer, reports : — Business daring the month, though there has been a paucity of transactions, has shown symptoms of increased confidence in the improving prosperity of the district, and a number of the oldest residents show a willingness to invest at present rates, both in property and live stock. Horses continue dull at present quotations, and cattle show no alteration in price, though a large number are changing hands. I hear of several, sales by prirato treaty, nnrnriT months. A good business has been done in sheep, also of a private nature, and showing an improvement. There has been a good enquiry for properties, but considerable difficulty experienced in closing. Among others, the _ sale ofmm purmm of Otrabhfauie :Faim~nrider mortgage, may be noted. There was a good attendance, but the bidding was confined to. four or five, and far from spirited: Could the terms have been arranged differently, no doubt a good price would have been realised. The lot of 632 a., lr., 3p. was knocked down to the mortgagee (who now becomes the owner) at 46s per acre. Had the sale taken place in the afternoon, a higher figure would have been obtained. Invercargill, 28th December, 1870.
