° DtrcfEDnr, Dec. 29. Government Has received letters from chiefs of various tribes, condemnatory of the conduct of the Waikato tribes regarding Mr Todd's murder. Many of them used to join the Waikatos in their every action, right or wrong. . On this account they have broken with them. The Native Minister's circular, inviting natives to compete for the Government prize offered for dressing flax, has been well responded to. Some beautifully dressed flax has been sent by Wi Tako. A half ton is to he despatched to England by the commissioners. Eecent advices from home state that railways can be easily constructed by guarantees at moderate rates. Mr Coote has offered to construct the Clutha line by guarantee on most advantageous terms. The General Government have invited him to come over to New Zealand without delay. In order to save time, they have issued tenders for the construction of a portion^ for cash payments. Auckland, via Tauranga. Waikato advices report that the King natives are in a state of excitement. The Sydney Herald and the Melbourne Argus condemn the action taken by the New Zealand; Government in concluding the postal contract without first consulting Victoria or New South Wales. The Sydney Morning JSerald advocates the despatch of Mr Co wper as a . delegate to Washington, to urge -the claims of the colony of New South Wales. Advices from Mr .Dillon Bell, received by the last mail, state that capitalists in the home country are willing to offer the money proposed by the Government loan. Hoketika, Dec. 27. The s.s. Eangitoto, Captain Mackie, with the English mails, cleared Port Phillip Heads at 1 a.m. on the 22nd inst. ; experienced strong S.E. winds all the way across, and arrived off Hokifika at 10 a.m. on the 27th.
