MELBOURNE.
The Argu* of the sth inst. reports : — In the import markets business has not been characterised by any appearance of activity, and little in the way of sales has come under our notice throughout the forenoon. 3n breadstuff's inquiries are confined to the supply of immediate wants, and transactions are in consequence of a very limited nature. Prices, however, are well supported, stocks on hand being too light to admit of a corresponding reduction to that which has recently taken place in the South Australian market. Holders of flour ask £12 15s to £13 per ton, 12s 9d to 13s per cental, for good brands, and refuse to. accept less money. Quotations for wheat stand at 5s 6d to 5s 9d per bushel, or 9a 2d to 9s 7d per cental. No sales i have however been recorded to-day. Oats are much duller again, ordinary samples more especially being neglected. 3d 4d to 3s 5d per bushel, or 8s 4d to 8s 6sd per cental, is required for such qualities ; good milling sorts are better looked after, and sales can be made at 3s 6d to 3s 7d per bushel, or 8s 9d to 8s ll^d per cental, much more readily. Maize is inactive, the demand is light, and the amount of business doing very trifling. We retain late quotations at 4s Id to 4s 2d per bushel, or 7s Sid to 7s sid per cental. Candles continue to meet with a good inquiry, and parcels up to 500 boxes in a line have been placed at 10£ d for best brands. In sugars, we hear of trade parcels being quitted of greyish* white crystals at £39. Patna rice is quitted at £21. There is little general demand experienced, bat we understand that about 75 tons of the Warrior's shipment have changed hands on private terms. . :
