Dfnedht, Nov. 3. j News from Auckland says the hon. { Julius Yogel is to address the electors of Auckland City East, to-night. He had received a deputation of miners from the Thames, respecting goldfields' waterworks. During the discussion, he ascribed existing depression to the absence of public works. Mr Yogel visited the Thames recently, where he received several deputations, and addressed a large public meeting, which afterwards passed a resolution approving of the Government policy. The Provincial Council has b3en opened by the Superintendent. The j opening speech complained that the General Government had opposed measures for the benefit of the Province. The " Southern Cross" replied by a three-column leader, condemning the j speech as disingenuous. j In debate on Busby's land claim, the j Council condemned the action of the I Superintendent in extinguishing land claims by money compensation. j The Provincial Secretary intimated that this would be considered a Government question. The debate continued next day, and would probably result in the defeat ofthe Government. Theßank of New Zealand's half-yearly dividend has been declared at the rate of 10 per cent., with a bonus of ss. Southern wheat is at os 6d ; oats, 3s 4d ; barley, 3s • and flour, £14 10s. The erection of the telegraph between Wanganui and Taraaaki is to be commenced forthwith. A Native meeting, at which 200 were present, was held last week, and convened by Tamati Teito. The result was favorable, Tamati declaring that fighting was at an end. The Provincial Council of Taranaki has adjourned for a fortnight, and members refuse to do business until the Superin. tendent takes his seat in the Council. Mr Yogel has been asked to stand for New Plymouth, but declined, as he had already accepted an Auckland requisition. Mr Fish has been returned for Dunedin. The numbers were — 'Fish, 395 ; Bathgate, 370 ; Birch, 149. A serious fire occurred at Mr Jago'a flax store on the Ist inst. A large number of bales were in the store, and the building and its contents were totally destroyed. The total loss is estimated at £8000, of which about an eighth is covered by insurance. A man named Thomas Soman, said to be suffering from the effects of hard drinking, rushed into the flames, and sustained injuries of which he died this day. A carter named Elliot was killed today by /the accidental upsetting of his dray..
