We beg to remind our readers of the ball which takes place in the Theatre Royal this evening. Members of the luvercargill Tlifle Volunteer Corps are elsewhere informed that th«y mn9t apply for their arms and ammunition at the orderly room this day, betwe3n the hours of 8 and 1, and 5 and 8 p.m., as the rooms hare to be vacated at once. Target practice is to begin on the 24th instant, and to continue until further orders. A reward is offered in our a Ivertising. columns for the discovery of the perpetrator of a species of crime which is happily of very rare occurrence in our district. We refer to the notice about altering the ear marks of 500 sheep. It is to be hoped that the guilty person may be discovered in order that fitting panishment may be inflicted for the committal of such a dastardly act. ■ Good ".houses" continue to patronise Dr Oarr*s entertainments every evening. Wa have scarcely been accustomed during these latter years to witness such . prolonged success as Dr Carrhas met with in Invercargill, and this of itself is sufficient to. prove the thorough appreciation which our. townsfolk have of the instruction and amusement provided for them. Several leading citizens, as well a3 one or two gentlemen who have accompanied his Honor the Superintendent on his visit here, submitted their heads for phrenological examination on Tuesday evening, and generally speaking came through the ordeal creditably. On Wednesday evening there was also a good muster on the stage, and on each occasion the mesmeric part of the programme was successfully carried through, the. mad . antics of those " under the influjflce" eliciting roars of
laughter while the serious attitudes stilled the mirth, and went to prove how easy it is to change from lively to severe. During the evening Mr Daniels sung several songs, which were well received. Last evening's entertainment passed off in the usual unexceptionable manner. The meeting of the local Flax Association, held in the Government Buildings on Monday evening, 3.7 th, was a very interesting one. A number of samples of -fibre, prepared by Canterbury mills, and forwarded by the sister Society there, were submitted for inspection, and afforded an opportunity for "instituting comparisons." .with the produce of our own manufacturers. ; It was - thought the fibre manufactured here was quite as valuable as the Canterbury samples, with one exception, that prepared by Mr Journeaui's process, which was peculiarly white and soft. Correspondence of value to the trade also formed the subject of discussion. One of the most encouraging of the letters read waa from the Superintendent of Auckland, giving a very minute' description of a steam rope factory which has been started in that province, and stating that the rope turned out was coming largely into use in the shipping of the port. It was found to answer well, being, in the writer's opinion, equal to European, and being profitably saleable at little over half the cost of Manilla, there was a fair prospect of the manufactory becoming ah extensive one. Several large foreign vessels visiting Auckland, amongst them the American man-of-war Besaca, had replaced part of their running gear with Auckland rope. It was dcci led to collect specimens of fibre from all the mills in the province if possible, and to forward portions to Canterbury. Some of the samples submitted' by local millers, Messrs Lockhart, Baasfcian, and others, were much, admired for their excellence. Mr John Oughton, who has recently moved his saw mill plant to thu Tuturau district, expressed his intention of adding flax-dressing to the business he had already commenced there. . The flii in that locality he considered of a superior^ quality, and othCT advantages were available, which fully compensated for the extra distance from port. ; A short Act was passed during the recent session of Assembly, in which power is given to the Governor, if so advised, to' appoint that the next general census shall be taken in 1871 instead of 1870. In addition to the information which the enumerators have hitherto been fcequirei . to obtain,' the. new Act provides that they should ascertain, in each case, the quantity of wheat, oats, and barley remaining on hand when the form is filled up. The new Act also provides that if any person objects to state whether he belongs to any or what religious denomination, the word " ob.-. jects" may be written in the form opposite the name. Our Bluff correspondent,. 1 writing on the 20th inst., says :— An amateur musical entertainment, was given in the school room last evening, in aid of the school funds. The attendance, as usual on such occasions, was all that could be desired, the room being quite full. The programme consisted of a number of well-selected pieces, ani, by way of variety, readings. The manner in which it was gone through showed that great care had been bestowed on its production, the rendering of the whole being, excellent, and storms of applause greeting the performers at the end of each piece. At the close of, the'perfortnaiice the chairman of the school committee sail he was requested to tender the thanks of the committee to thoae ladies and 'gentlemen wlKfhad so" successfully" contributed to: their amusement that evening, and by their efforts on several previous occasions hal so considerably supplemented the school funds.
