PUBLIC MEETING.
♦ THE SUPERINTENDENT'S VISIT. 1 On the evening of Tuesday last a public meeting took place in the Prince lof Wales Hotel to adopt step 5 * for providino: a suitable reception to hisrHonbr the Superintendent on the occasion of his projected visit to Southland. Mr F. W. Wade, as chairman of the preliminary committee, presided. In introducing the business, Mr Wade brought up a report from the preliminary committee suggesting that the reception should take the form of a dejeuner, to be followed by a | public ball. The proposal wa* discussed at considerable length. Messrs Wood, Macrorie, and others spoke in favor of it, and a variety of suggestions were made respecting details. Mr ICingpland, although not opposing the report, aug- j eested that it was an event in which a juvenile demonstration might fairly take part. Mr Wright objected to the proposal on the ground that the expense would be so great that only a select few would be enabled to take part in it. After a prolonged discussion, separate motions were carried embodying the substance of the report, together with the further proposal that an address be presented to his Honor on his arrival at the railway station, and likewise a treat provided for the children. The following gentlemen were named a committee to carry out the arrangements : — Messrs W. Wood, John ! Blacklock, A. J. Smyth. Calder, Macdonald, Trotter, Hamilton, Watson, M'Pherson, Johnston, Macrorie, Webster, Kingsland, Crouch, Ekensteen, and Trumble. The Ball Committee includes Messrs W. Wood (M.H.8.), Griejor, Hare, Fraser, Macrorie, Shearer, Kerr, Moffett, Garven, Martin, M'Lean, Cochran, Hatch, Cotton, G-oodwillie, Tapper, Mitchell, and A. J. Smyth.
