Airedale left Onehunga wharf (with the Californian mail) at 12.30 p.m. on the 14th, end had strong S.W. winds and beam sea, arriving off Taranaki at 2.30 a.m. on the 15th ; sailed at 6.30 a.m., and arrived off Nelson Lighthouse at 8.30 p.m. same day ; entered the harbor at 9.30 p.m., and sailed again at midnight. After passing Jackson's Heads had to ease the engines on account of the dense fog, which delayed her arrival at Picton till 7.45 a.m. on the 16th ; discharged and sailed from thence at 8.30, and had fine weather across the Straits, reaching Wellington at 1.15 same afternoon ; left at 6.30 that night, and had light varianle winds with fine weather to Lyttelton, at which port she arrived the following morning at 11 30 ; proceeded in the ■ afternoon at 2.30 ; light breeze with dense fog prevailed from 2 to 7 o'clock on Sunday morning, which prolonged the passage. Even under such a disadvantage the Airedale arrived at Port Chalmers at 10.30, having made the trip from Onehunga in six hours less time than the pro- j ■posed through route of 100 hours. If the ] Dunedin authorities had wished, they could have delivered the mail in town in 96 hours from the time the Airedale left the Manukau. The Airedale discharged her mails and cargo, cleared at the Customs, and sailed on Sunday afternoon. Arrived at the Bluff at 8.30 a.m. on Monday morning. - . • - :
