M'Mahon had wished-to burn, but was overruled. ~ Napoleon was, forced to fall back in consequence. <■■■■■. Frossard's corps was also defeated and compelled- to retreat, to. Metz. ; : On the . 10th; a great battle was i im- . minent at Strasbourg, which was sur-T rounded by 50,000. troops. . The Prussians were advancing from Saarlouia and-Treves, and were expected j to make an immediate attack upon Metz.. j - The French losses in the^ngagements which have already taken place are put down at 30,000.
