Sydstet, August 26. The Government were defeated in committee last night on the Deficiency Loan Bill by the casting vote of the chairman of Committees. The Assembly has passed through all its stages a bill compelling witnesses to attend the Pental Island commission. Mr Samuel's resignation of the Treasurership is considered probable. A discovery of a rich quartz reef is reported on the Western railway, 10 miles from Bathurst. Lieutenant Hopkins, late of the Royal Artillery, has been appointed captain on the Volunteer staff. Captain Beal, late of the Wonga Wonga, has obtained a verdict of -S2OO damages against the Californian mail contractor, for wrongful dismissal. Nothing definite has yet been received from the reported new quartz reefs, near Bathurst. The Exhibition was to be opened on the 30th. Fiji news to July 23 has been received. New York advices to June 30 report — Kerosene oil closed at 27c. for standard white, in bulk ; 32c. to 33c. for tins Canadian oil expected to suit colonies. Exchange on London, nine premium. Gold, llOf. The Elizabeth Nicholson has 157,000 ft. lumber, 12,000 cases kerosene, 81,5001b5. tobacco, 735 cases lobsters, 250 packages dried apples, and sundries. The Oneco, from Boston, June 23, has 8,800 cases kerosene, 50 half-tierces, 15 cases tobacco, and a large shipment of lumber. The Koh-i-noor had arrived, and Mr Butters had had an interview with the creditors of the Fiji Company. After examining Glenny's accounts he promised payment of all claims. Intelligence had been received that Mr Norman, formierly of Sandhurst, who was supposed to have been drowned, had been captured by Nasavusavu, who killed him seven days after, and cooked his body. A white man named Maloney was reported* to have been murdered at Sgotoko Novosa. The tribe attacked the settlement on the northern coast of Viti Levu, and massacred 370. Many others are missing, and only about 100 escaped. The "United States steamer Pocahontas was' expected at Levuka.
