THE BREAKWATER
Sib,— The ; planking of the Waihopai and other bridges and culverts is so thoroughly rotten that they are dangerous to life and property. So thoroughly is this the case, that the North road traffic has to diverge to the Mabel one, preparatory to the whole traffic falling into the Dunediu to Wakatipu road as usual. Application to the Government for the repair of 'bridges and culverts, from time to time, is met by the reply, "We have no funds I** In these circumstances, would it not be wise to utilise the fine two-inch planking ;«f the breakwater, now not required, at the railway diversion below Mr Dalrymple's property ? This planking would be valuable for platforms along the northern railway for accommodation to the settlers at {hfe various crossings. In my perambulations for fresh air, I have noticed that this planking is being carried off. Can .you tell me where to, or by whose authority? if sold, or gifted, or whether it may be part of the great scheme for diminishing the railway station ?— Yours, &c, • : Colonist. [We will inquire into the matter, and answer our correspondent's questions in next issue.— Ed. 8. T~\ .v.
