COMMERCIAL.

D; -M-CBOBTE, Auctioneer, reports : — The Winton sale on Wednesday last, being the first attempted in the district for more than two years, attracted the attention of the settlers, and may fairly be represented as establishing a series of five or six throughout the year. From the prices realised at this season of the year, when the roads, almost impassable, are the only means of communication; it is evident that this important agricultural neighborhood possesses among its own residents a competitive market. — On-future occasions, as the means of transit are improved, and buyers from, a distance find they can depend on the stock being yarded, a larger attendance will no doubt be secured. . The first pen of cattle, mixed sexes, and mostly .young, realised £2 12s 6d, after which the most were disposed. of singly. Steers, mostly fat, £6 15s; dairy cows, £4 10s ; heifers, £2 10s to £3 10s. . From the fact of. all selling (with only two exceptions) there is no doubt, a larger muster would have changed hands, and there are evidenced of an upward tendency as compared with previous quotations. Jlorses , (not previously advertised) did not secure buyers. •; Hacks were evidently not - required,- and the draughts were of a most -.-superior class, and bought in, the last bona fide T)ids being as high as from £35 to £45. The next sale at Winton was announced to "take place seven weeks- hence, 31st August, when the market would also be tested as regards another description of stock, namely, sheep.
