LOSS THE STEAMSHIP GOLDEN CITY.
Awounts have been received at Lloyd's of the total loss of the steamship Golden City, while on lier passage from San Francisco for Panama, on the 22nd April, at Cape Lozaro, on the coast of Lower California. She was 2600 tons register, and had .'on board about 36Q passengers, with treasure of the value of £18,000, consigned to banters in England, France, and New York. The steamer struck about seven o'clock in the morning, during a dense fog. The captain and officers disappeared at once into their cabins, and soon returned armed. There was peat consternation amon? the crew and passengers, and the orders of the officers were for-a- time contrary. The first officer, called out, " Man the lifebpate," and m a few seconds he added, "The first man who touches them^fill- fe shqtA The steerage passengers at once armed 'th'emselves with life-preservers, but less excitable and more orderly. 'After a while ; the captain appeaseS the eicitemen^ and the passengers obeying" bis orders, ihe boats . .ware lowered and were filled with passengers as eipeditiously as possible. The% TiaviSg by this time cleared away,' it was seen that fbe steamer had run on a iaia bank within 300 yards of the coast. Happily ' there was up swell on, and the boats were able to reacii the shore In safety. In a few hours all the : pass^riger» and crew were 'safely landed. On the coast there is a, .barren, w^sja of sand, with no habitation neare* than fortymiles.
