MELBOURNE.
The Daily Telegraph of the 23rd ulfc. reports :— Business baa been conducted upon a moderate tcale to-day, and buyers are disinclined to enter into anything like large transactions. Flour s not in much demand, but prices have undergone no alteration. Wheat continues saleable at about 4e 9d to 4b lid, though transactions hare been by no means large. Oats of good qualify are firmly held, and prices remain steady at about 3s 2d to 8s 6d. Maize has maintained its value, and we understand the importer of the Sarah's cargo is firm in his demand of a foil market rate. Cape barley was quitted at auction at 3s Id per bushel. The continued steady trade doing in sugar induces the belief that buyers will ere long pay the rate necessary to save importers from absolute loss. A sale of 400 bags of yellow, crystals, took place today from £35 to £35 10s. We notice on refer- _ race to prices ruling 12 months eince, that the ' rates were then at least £5 higher than those ruling at present, in spite of the recent advance of upwards of £3 per ton. In general merchandise but little business has transpired, and the markets are yery languid. Salt is neglected, and the price merely nominal. Oils are extremely dull, and buyers disinclined to operate. Candles have been little dealt in, and prices barely maintained. Corneaoks are clow of sale at 10s 9d, holders appearing somewhat anxious to reduce j stocks. In liquids no transactions hare been , reported. The prevailing dulness is in some measure attributable to the disinclination on the fMtrt of the trade to hold anything more than extremely moderate stocks.
